The Phantom of the Opera Haunts the Upper Keys

The Phantom of the Opera Haunts the Upper Keys

Authored By Carolyn DePaula

Michelle Zofchak has done it again. The Coral Shores High School (CSHS) drama teacher has produced and directed a show which is a delight for the ears, eyes, and hearts. Ms. Z, as she's affectionately dubbed by her students, has fifteen years of bringing quality theater to the Upper Keys. The Phantom of the Opera is her magnum opus to date, a moving story brought to life through the genius of Andrew Lloyd Weber's music and his production group The Really Useful Group and executed with passion and conviction by our own CSHS students.

The Phantom is not an easy feat to accomplish by any means. It has multiple layers, plays within the play - an opera with costumes and many sets which change often, and a moving, on-stage boat.

The musical also includes a number of dance acts featuring ballerinas and some challenging, melodious songs. Together with the community and the CSHS art and construction department, the ominously hanging chandelier didn't disappoint.

The cast worked very hard and showed much talent. Although everyone did a terrific job, the highlights for me were the capricious Carlotta, played by the versatile and appropriately sassy junior Caitlin Yong, the angel-voiced Joy Maryanski's Meg Giri, the ballerina, and the leads: the romantic Raoul played by artistic Zane Absten, the stirring Alexis Lee Duran's Christine and the enormously talented junior David Maryanski, the Phantom. In many parts, he was channeling my favorite phantom of all time, Michael Crawford from the 1986 Original London cast.

Thank you for bringing the Florida Keys quality theater. We truly don't feel like we need to head to the mainland to experience quality entertainment and culture.
